STORIES
5 female puppies in a sack
16th August 2008. A sack was thrown in the middle of the road in front of a ZAWF member’s house. Cars and trucks were driving up and down the road, trying to avoid the sack. Fortunately, someone noticed that the sack was moving. When they opened it they found 5 female puppies inside. We looked after them for 2 months until eventually good homes were found for all the sisters.
Rocky 2
ZAWF volunteers from Lagana beach had known Rocky for months, and used to feed him with the other strays on the beach. One day we found Rocky in an awful condition. A nice greek man, who also cared about him, told us that Rocky got in a fight with another male dog, because one of the stray bitches was in season. There was a severe wound on the left side of his face. When we picked him up he couldn't open his left eye, there were about 5 other smaller wounds all around his head and back, he also had an infected pad on his back left leg and his mouth was very swollen. The vet said that he had been shot in the leg, which was badly infected, and he had been beaten. Rocky had been on antibiotics which were very strong and had to have yogurt every day. He was in a lot of pain, but such a brave boy, he was looking so much better than when we picked him up. He had been fostered by ZAWF and after all his adventures we managed to find a good family for him!!!
Rocky 1
Rocky was found in the town with an awful injury at his ear. We heard that his owner refused to take care of him and damned the 9 year old dog. ZAWF collected the poor dog. Also Rocky’s blood tests proved that he suffered from erlichia. After an operation at the ear and a good treatment, he recovered. Rocky has an excellent character, is well behaved with other dogs and cats and very tender with children. Today he lives with his new family who really loves and protects him.
Kaja
Kaja was horrifyingly thrown by someone into an abandoned house’s backyard in Lithankia last November. The throw over the fence by the evil person, broke her little leg in 3 places. Neighbours heard her crying and called ZAWF. The members of ZAWF collected the poor puppy that couldn’t stop crying from the pain, and learnt that the operation would prove very difficult – she could possibly lose her leg, and very costly. Here our sister charity Inselhunde-in-Not in Germany stepped in and assumed responsibility and all costs to transport, treat and rehabilitate Kaja in Germany. She survived the surgery, her leg was saved. and was immediately adopted by a loving family and 2 other dogs!
Dafni
Last October, Dafni with her 4 sisters were abandoned in a box in the playground behind Solomos square. A group of children found the poor puppies and asked for help to ZAWF. All the puppies were blood tested and vaccinated. Then ZAWF put them to the adoption program and managed to find really good families for them.
Paula
Paula and her brother were abandoned in Aktrotiri by an elderly foreign couple that go up and left Zakynthos after residing here for years and simple left behind their dogs, wandering the roads. The two dogs are pedigree Great Danes, impressive dogs with friendly, gentle natures. ZAWF were called in to collect the dogs from wandering around the neighborhood, and scaring everyone just from their size! The male found a home immediately in Zakynthos however Paula’s blood test proved she was suffering from, and in advanced stage, the horrible disease of leishmaniasis. An awful decision for ZAWF to then take for her future, particularly considering her appetite for life, play and company. Then a miracle happened – a member of our sister fund Inselhunde-in-Not in Germany learnt of Paulas situation, was deeply moved because she had recently lost a dog to leishmaniasis, decided to adopt Paula and hence save her life. She came to Zakynthos to collect Paula in July. Today lucky Paula has gained weight, and her overall appearance bares no resemblance to the sick dog that was collected up from the countryside of Akrotiri. She continues her therapy and live a beautiful life in a family that love her dearly!
Kitten with Bad Eye
The kitten with the bad eye was abandoned in the garden of one of our members and was taken to the vet to have the eye removed. This type of problem is mainly seen in kittens and is normally the result of cat flu. The lady who found the kitten was prepared to give the little guy a home but as she was unable to care for it after the operation Marilyn looked after him until he had recovered. The pre-operative photos were taken when he was under the anaesthetic prior to the operation and photos were also taken showing how dirty his ears were. As can be seen from the other photo, he made a good recovery.
Iria
Iria is a hyperactive, affectionate little dog, who suddenly found herself playing in a garden with a family’s children and dogs. The family who found Iria discovered that her left leg was broken and funded her recovery. However, they were unable to keep the injured animal, so she was looked after at a ZAWF member’s house for 3 months. She was then adopted by a family of animal lovers, and lives in a mountain village where she runs happily in the fields with their other dogs.
Decapitated Puppy
A stray dog found shelter in derelict house, where calmly and quietly she gave birth to her 6 puppies. A lady from the neighbourhood visited her every day to provide food and water. One day, while approaching the stray family, she came across a terrifying sight. Somebody had beheaded one of the puppies. There was no doubt that the action had been carried out with the knife and by human hand. The shocked woman called ZAWF asking us to take the animals to safety. The family was looked after by a member for almost a month, throughout which time the little dog constantly showed signs of fear.
The family’s story and photographs touched many animal lovers, resulting in them being adopted quickly. One kind family adopted the mother together with two of her remaining puppies.
Puppies Outside a School
A little dog had had puppies near to a junior school. The mother and her puppies wandered around the school, causing concern to some of the parents. The Headmaster, an animal lover, started to feed and look after the homeless family, but following complaints he was forced to ask ZAWF for help. A member of ZAWF took the puppies home and looked after them for approximately two months, until new homes were found.
Dog from Agala
A member of the association came across a stray dog while passing through the village of Agala. The dog was being fed by the owners of a nearby restaurant. The animal loving volunteer took the dog home, touched by the dogs’ condition. Later it was discovered that the animal was suffering from Kalazaar at an advanced staged and had to be put to sleep.
Emil
Emil lived in the seaside village of Alikes for a year and a half as a stray in a pack of dogs who were visited and fed by ZAWF. One day he appeared with a terrible wound to his head. Nobody knew how it had happened.
ZAWF’s vet assured us that with the correct therapy and a lot of patience, his wound would heal. He was then looked after in a member’s home, while being placed on the adoption program. Two weeks later, a family from Germany, touched by the animal’s story, asked to adopt him and take over his care. The dog was operated on in Germany, with funds provided by his new family, and today Emil lives happily together with them.
Dody
Dody lived at Tsilivi beach since 2008. In the summer, he was wondering to the beach which was a disturbance for many local bar owners who threatened to “extinguish” him as well as the other strays at the beach. A very nice lady – who tried hard to save stray animals from the streets and lots of cases succeded in her goals – cared and fed Dody and his stray friends. Having in mind the threatens of the locals against the poor animals, the lady managed to find new homes for some of them.
Nevertheless Dody was still in the dangerous street so the lady asked for help at ZAWF. In cooperation with ZAWF, she fostered Dody and his friend Lisa who both were put on an adoption program. They were vaccined, sterilized and finally Lisa was rehomed in Zakynthos and on the 23rd of April Dody traveled to meet his new family in Germany.
Fivos
Fivos was found by Magda in the center of the town. He is about 2 months old and when Magda saw him his front legs (especially the right one had serious problem). She thought that he had a car accident but Marinos said the puppy suffers by lack of calcium. Now he is fostered at my house, we give him calcium every day and his legs are much better. He is healthy, beautiful, playful, good with other dogs. First vaccination 17/2/09 & second vaccination 3/3/09.
Achilles and Hector
In August 2008, an English tourist called the ZAWF helpline to declare his shock at finding two tiny puppies placed in a plastic bag and thrown in a rubbish bin. The little brothers were approximately 6 days old, healthy and full of life. A member of ZAWF took care of the puppies until they were adopted. Today, the two puppies – who were so heartlessly disposed of – live happily and proudly with their new families.
