PRESS RELEASES

Stray Action Pet Therapy Hellas to visit Zakynthos
The team from SAPT Hellas is due to visit Zakynthos at the weekend on invitation by the Zakynthos Animal Welfare Fund.
The team will be on the island from Friday 6th to Sunday 8th of March and will take part in a presentation at the Zakynthos School Music. The group consisting of 7 volunteers and 6 dogs will give information on animal care to children from the island’s schools. When a child learns to respect animals, it also learns to respect quality of life and to comprehend that we as people are part of nature. It is our duty to respect natures various aspects if we and our descendants desire to have spiritual and physical health.
ZAWF together with SAPT decided to work with the aim of developing a respect towards animals and to life in general within the conscience of our children.
SAPT Hellas passes important messages to schoolchildren regarding the responsible care of animals. They also educate children on how to react when seeing a stray animal or pet, or recognize an animal with various dermatological problems, how to behave so as not to entice defensive behavior in animals, and the importance of sterilization.
The aspects covered in the presentation are illustrated step by step in an information leaflet that will be distributed to all children attending. The key of the presentation is to educate in such a way that it is not seen by the children as just a list of rules, but a practical example of joint affection between them and the animals. The children will be invited to mimic the correct way to treat animals assisted by the trained dogs and volunteers attending. There will also be the chance for the young visitors to ask questions regarding animal care.
ZAWF would like to thank the businesses who have offered their warm hospitality to the team and the 6 dogs from SAPT Hellas. Our thanks go to the Ferry Service of Zakynthos, the Hotel BITZARO and restaurants MALANOS, ANTETI and MANTEIO.

THE ANIMAL CHRISTMAS PARTY
Saturday 15th December was a true day of festivities for the animals of Zakynthos. Despite the cold, many children came to St. Mark's Square in order to enter their dogs in the dog contests. The contestants ranged from small Yorkshire terriers to large Boxers and from pure bred Huskies to mixed dogs of "unknown origin". Although all the contestants were adorable, most of the awards went to ex-strays which have been adopted by Zakynthian families. It was a sign of moral support to those who adopt strays and an encouragement to those who are contemplating adoption.

Later the supporters had the chance to enjoy a theatrical play by the children's group of FIERA, based on the discrimination and unjust human behaviour towards animals. In the evening, 4 groups of children took part in a game of treasure hunt, which led the children to the discovery of messages which attempted to increase their sensitivity towards animals and nature.

Many visitors expressed an interest in animal welfare issues and the work of the Zakynthos Animal Welfare Fund.

All the projects entered in the competition were on display at St. Mark's Square.

From the previous day, ZAWF had organized a Christmas Fayre, which was a great success. Last year’s fundraising total was exceeded, with a total of just over 2,000 euros raised over the two days. Many thanks are due to the great organizing and hard work of the fundraising volunteers. Before the end of the event, Christmas carols were sung while photos were taken of Santa with the children.

For the grand finale, three adorable strays, which had been in the temporary foster care of ZAWF, were adopted by new families who had attended the fayre.
