NEWS

Newsletter 2009
• Sterilisations: 88 dogs, 67 cats
• Adoptions: 218 dogs, 78 cats
• 7-8/3/2009: A seminar was held for school children by SAPT Hellas. The SAPT team, which is made of 7 trainers with 6 dogs, came from Athens to show Zakynthian students and parents the correct way to approach as well as to treat a dog. They also shared helpful hints on being a responsible dog owner. The seminar took place at the “Music School of Zakynthos”.
• 14-15/3/2009: The showing of “The child and the fox” at Foscolo cinema. The cinema club donated 500€ from the tickets proceeds to ZAWF.
• 16/4/2009: Zawf’s Easter bazaar at St Mark’s Square.
• 1/5 – 31/8/2009: Campaign for Sterilization
Our society conducted an organized campaign on informing the public about the need to sterilize pets. We were supported by all the vets of the prefecture who gave a 15% discount to everyone who had a zawf sterilization form. Posters were put up, a large number of informative pamphlets were distributed at busy locations (i.e. banks, post office, vet’s), articles were published in local newspapers and magazines. An informative commercial was also aired on ERZ.
• 3/5/2009: 13km hike in the woods (with our dogs), Kiliomeno-Louha-Yperagatho-Kiliomeno.
• 4/6/2009: Protest and charges were brought to the Police and Mayor of Zakynthos against the circus with wild animals. Besides the fact that the Mayor of Zakynthos had agreed, after a written request by us (record. No 9, 27/4/2004), not to grant any operation licence to any circus with wild animals within his jurisdiction, one circus was set up and put on shows without having the required licence of operation. The circus did not stop the illegal performances despite our daily objections to the Police and Municipality, the arrest of the manager and the fine (2.900€) for putting up posters.
• 19-20/6/2009: Photo exhibit in cooperation with “Fotogramma” at Portokali bar. The proceeds from photo sales went to animal welfare.
• 11/2009: A bag with informative material about animal welfare issues and responsible pet ownership was created for the schools of Zakynthos. The educator-members of Zawf assisted in developing a rich packet of informative material, power-point presentations, games and activities for children ages 5-13. In cooperation with school teachers, the “ZAWF School Bag” is visiting schools in Zakynthos with the purpose of educating the next generation so as to have the right principles towards animals.
• 18-19/12/2009: Zawf’s Christmas bazaar.
• 23-24/12/2009: Christmas Fair at Foscolos cinema with activities for children (theatrical game, storytelling, clown, carols played by the Philarmonic).

REPORT OF PROCEEDINGS 2008
ZAWF carried out the following:
146 sterilizations (73 female dogs and 18 male dogs), (38 female cats and 17 male cats)
Also during 2008, 162 adoptions of dogs, and 84 adoptions of cats

The Fundraising Committee achieved the following:
3,500 € from sales of the ZAWF calendar and other items
2,000 € from money boxes
7,000 € in total from boot fairs, the Easter bazaar and the summer events in Alykana
We owe thanks to Maureen, Tracy, Alan, Kay and Guy for their grand efforts in accumulating the above results, and to all those who helped at the Easter bazaar.

The donation of land, provisionally granted by the Church for the creation of a shelter for stray animals, is still pending. Architect (Mr Dimitris Bardakastanis) and the committee handling the subject, visited the area in question and deemed it unsuitable. Upon inspection they decided that the largest part was on an incline, and the remainder was too small. The Bishop has promised to find another site. A meeting is scheduled to take place, by 17th November this year, in the mountainous regions where the said pieces of land are located in order to find a suitable plot. It was noted that there was no question of negligence or lack of enthusiasm on behalf of the Church. However, the original target date for closure on this matter, end of 2008, is unfeasible.

Following talks with Arkadion Council regarding proposals for action, Mayor Stelios Bozikis promised the sum of 1,000€ to assist with sterilization of female dogs in the area, to be paid by the end of 2008. This has not yet materialized.

Following discussions with Lagana Council regarding proposals for action, the Council Committee a) placed advisor Kostas Markoutsas as responsible for the stray animal protection program and b) on 6.11.08 the decision was made to sponsor the sum of 5,000€ for the sterilization of all female stray dogs in the area. The action was carried out in close co-operation with our association and should become an example for all the island’s councils.

ZAWF participated in the 1st Pan-Hellenic Congress of Animal Welfare Organisations held in Karditsa on 18th & 19th November 2008. The meeting and exchange of information with other Greek associations was a very interesting and useful experience. The creation of a Federation of Animal Welfare Organisations was announced. It was also noted that the legal processes required will be completed by April 2009. ZAWF expressed its support, and will become a Federation member.

The boot fairs started on Sunday 9th November (Petrinos Kipos in Tragaki). The premises used for boot fairs will as always be on a rota basis, and announced in the local papers. The Christmas bazaar was once again held in St Mark’s Square and raised 1,661€.

On Sunday 23rd November, ZAWF organized the 1st Animal Welfare Marathon. The event started from St Marks’ Square at 11pm, and took a trail covering 6km (St Mark’s Sq, A. Roma St, Pirkadiotissa, Bohali, Psiloma, Ag. Triada, St Mark’s). Over 100 volunteers took part accompanying approximately 70 dogs. The event raised 2,340€.

The Education Committee has carried out the following:
1. Program of visits to schools, nurseries, and other youth groups with the aim of educating and sensitizing young people on the subjects of responsible guardianship, (not ownership) of animals, and the wellbeing of domestic pets. It has prepared a series of activities and exercises on which the children will work on.
2. The Education Team SAPT Hellas (www.sapt.gr) will visit Zakynthian schools during February and March 2009. It is a team from Athens who use ex-stray dogs trained to bring children close to animals in the correct manner. Their program has been approved by the Ministry of Education.

Three advertisements with subjects 1) sterilisation 2) abandonment 3) the responsible guardianship of animals, are now being broadcast on local TV. The adverts have been kindly sponsored by “Argos”, the Animal Welfare Association of Thessaloniki.

A promo DVD, showing the actions of ZAWF is being made. Photographers IRIDA, specifically Dionisis Papadatos, kindly offered to work on the making of the DVD.

Stray dog poisoned
“Wolf” aka “Joey” was one of the Laganas stray dogs under the care of ZAWF. He had recently been microchipped and vaccinated as a new home for him had been found. He was going to be one of the lucky ones. He had managed to survive three years on the streets, chasing bikes and making many friends along the way.
Wolf went missing from Laganas last Saturday . His body was found on Wednesday in the woods near kalamaki beach. He did not die of natural causes. Persons unknown had most probably poisoned him, and his legs were bound. We can only imagine the horror and pain this dog must have endured.
Reports have been filed with the local police and mayor’s office, and ZAWF remain committed to stopping such atrocious acts of barbarism.
