Events

ZAWF Junior Team
The ZAWF JUNIOR team organized a raffle, on Sunday 16th of May. At XEN place, where the raffle and the Sunday Bazaar took place, lots of children and friends arrived with their dogs. The lucky winners won 40 prizes, we had a great time and we collected 510€. Children also came to join the ZAWF JUNIOR team as new active members.

Easter Bazaar 2010
For the third consecutive year the Zakynthian Animal Welfare Fund held their Easter Bazaar on Easter Thursday 1/04/2010 in the St Markos Square. Friends of ZAWF and passers-by visited the bazaar and had the opportunity to buy spring seedlings and plants, Easter candles, decorations and presents. The Zawf JUNIOR branch also had a stall and their energy, laughter and commitment enriched the whole day for everyone. They were diligent in informing everyone that visited our stalls about their Zakynthian Animal Welfare rapidly growing youth group, enlisting new members inviting other younger people to join in! ZAWF would like to warmly thank:- Nektario Farao for all the plants that he generously donated from his shop, and Sconto Center Therianos for the lovely Easter presents that they also donated.
And also a big thanks to everyone that supported our efforts.

CHRISTMAS WOOF-GAMES2009

Guided Walk - Sunday 3rd May
ZAWF organized a walk, Sunday of 3 May. The walk – people accompanied by dogs - began at 10 in the morning and included a route of 13 kilometers in the countryside. The point of meeting was 500 meters outside from the village Kiliomenos, on the right on at the crossroad that leads to Iperagathos (there we parked the cars). The walkers (2 legged and 4 legged) were guided to the village of Louha from there to Iperagathos and returned in the point of departure. The time was wonderful, the Zakynthian countryside enchanting and everything around aromatic. At the end of the route the group made a picnic in a green meadow where they played and rested until late in the afternoon!

Easter Bazaar 2009
Last Thursday the ZAWF held an Easter Bazaar with a stall in St Mark’s Square in Zakynthos town. Two florist’s carts full of spring flowers and plants, hand-made candles (crafted by our volunteers) and other Easter items for sale made for an impressive and eye-catching display. Even the local police on duty said the stall brought life to the square! Many children visited the stall to have their photographs taken with the big Easter rabbit. The stall was open from the morning all the way through to midnight, staffed by volunteers, and thanks to their sterling efforts and a responsive public the sum of 923 euros was raised. Well done to all!
So many Easter cookies had been made by volunteers that along with the cakes donated by Malafouris Bakery in Laganas, some remained unsold at the end of the day. On Holy Saturday morning these were taken to the Old People’s Home of Zakynthos and were offered to the residents as Easter gifts. They were received with much appreciation and gratitude .
We would like to thank our generous sponsors for this event:
ΦΥΤΩΡΙΑ (GARDEN CENTRE) SOZOS & NEKTARIOS FARAOS, SCONTO CENTER THERIANOS, "LAGANAS" MALAFOURIS BAKERY.

The ZAWF Fun Day
The ZAWF Fun Day at Premier Bar, Laganas on Saturday 28th March was a huge success. We managed to raise over €350 due to the great turn out, so thanks to all those of you who supported the event.

Our grateful thanks go to The Premier crew, especially Kim for the wonderful buffet she laid on, Dave and Sandra for the bingo, Ailsa and Bones for the live music, and Lynn for the tarot card readings.

The ladies pamper day
The ladies pamper day for ZAWF in Argassi on Wednesday 4th March was a huge success, raising over 300 Euros. We had a masseus, a nail techician, an angel card reader and alternative herbal therapies and hopi ear candles. All therapists provided their services free of charge and donated their takings to ZAWF. Sue donated a hand made piece of jewellery, and Gill and Lizzie donated a hand painted wooden bowl to raffle. We also sold some of the new leather coats we had kindly donated. Thanks also go to Chris and Matt for providing the venue free of charge as well as a complimentary glass of wine and nibbles to guests.

Thank you to all those ladies who supported the event, and, as several of you said they enjoyed it so much can we do another one, we will be offering another chance to pamper yourselves in approximately a month, so watch out for the adverts.

Stray Action Pet Therapy Hellas to visit Zakynthos
The team from SAPT Hellas (implementing three projects funded by “the Stavros Niarchos Foundation”) visited Zakynthos last weekend on invitation by the Zakynthos Animal Welfare Fund.
The team was on the island from Friday 6th to Sunday 8th of March and took part in a presentation at the Zakynthos School of Music. The group consisting of 7 volunteers and 6 dogs gave information on animal care to children from the island’s schools. When a child learns to respect animals, it also learns to respect quality of life and to comprehend that we as people are part of nature. It is our duty to respect nature’ s various aspects if we and our descendants desire to have spiritual and physical health.
ZAWF together with SAPT Hellas decided to work with the aim of developing a respect towards animals and to life in general within the conscience of our children.
SAPT Hellas passed important messages to schoolchildren regarding the responsible care of, and behavior towards, animals. They also educated children on how to react when seeing a stray animal or pet, or recognize an animal with various skin problems, how to behave so as not to entice defensive behavior in animals, and the importance of spaying/neutering.
The aspects covered in the presentation are illustrated step by step in an informational leaflet that was distributed to all children attending. The key of the presentation was to educate in such a way that it was not seen by the children as just a list of rules, but a practical example of joint affection between them and the animals. The children were invited to imitate the correct way to treat animals assisted by the trained dogs and volunteers attending. There was also a chance for the young visitors to ask questions regarding animal care and behavioral issues.
ZAWF would like to thank the businesses who offered their warm hospitality to the team and the 6 dogs from SAPT Hellas. Our thanks go to the Ferry Service of Zakynthos, the Hotel BITZARO and restaurants MALANOS, ANTETI and MANTEIO.

1st Animal Lovers Marathon a Great Success!
Despite the rain, last Sunday over 100 animal lovers and around 70 dogs took part in the 1st Animal Lovers Marathon which was organized by ZAWF. This was a ‘sponsored walk’ whereby the participants collected monies in the form of sponsorship for completing the course.
The large company of two and four footed ‘marathonians’ walked form St Mark’s Square in the centre of town through Pikradiotissa, up to Bohali and down via Ayia Triada arriving back in St mark’s Square having covered a distance of 6km. All involved were keen to organise another such event with an even longer route! Many young students took part along with other animal welfare supporters. All the dogs were friendly and well-behaved – a credit to their owners.
Many thanks are due to the Association of Greek Women Drivers of Zakynthos and their young helpers who provided water stops every kilometer along the route. Also, as always we thank our sponsors for the event:
Portokali, Octopus, Planitario Bookshop, Kangouras Electronics, Eyesite Sunglasses, Athlokinis, Marinos Patiris the Vet, Diana Paraschi Language Centre, Base café and the Plessas Group of Companies.
Many thanks, of course to all the walkers and supporters of this event. The money raised will help towards the ongoing work of ZAWF in sterilizing, treating and re-homing of stray animals on the island,
